When you are done with your laundry day, somewhere in the schedule you have to iron wrinkled shirts you need to wear. Humans are known for easily doing this task, when sometimes robots aren't as good at handling clothes. When a human irons or folds a shirt, there's a lot of different techniques you need to apply for doing that task, like noticing the wrinkles, applying water to your iron, changing the levels of heat from the iron, and noticing what cloth/texture the piece of apparel you are working with. In the University of Columbia, (in New York) researchers have added the final touches onto the robot they have been working on for a time period of over three years. Basically, the purpose of this robot, and what it can do, was that it had the ability to iron a shirt after noticing the wrinkles and ridges laid-out in the shirt (the shirt was flatly laid-out in a table). In order for this robot to detect the wrinkles on the shirt, it uses two sensors that are from the XBOX Kinect, that are applied close to the front by the iron in the robot. “Basically, we’re just saying that if you have an object that doesn’t have a rigid set of states, you have to have a way to model it and deal with is, and what we were able to do is model these objects in a very nice way and figure it out,” said Peter Allen, a professor of computer science at Columbia who co-authored the paper. The technology to make this robot to perform this certain particular task, must've gone through a long process of designing and making from the students and researchers at Columbia University. The technology that was used for this, most likely will be used for future references for other subjects on robotics that people and researchers are trying to find out.
Thoughts, Ideas and Opinions
I think that what this robot can do, is pretty amazing because if this robot can flawlessly iron a simple wrinkled shirt, then I wonder, "what can other robots be capable of doing in the next couple of years?" With more people using the technology of robotics, later in the future, more robots will be able to do more things that the humans are doing today. Later, in the next generations to come, robots will be doing more things and take all the jobs that the humans are doing now. These robots will be able to be efficient, faster, and flawless in performing a level from easy to difficult tasks. Simple movements or actions that robots can do, lead to BIG things and ideas that will follow up within the future. I believe that robots will take over the world, (NOT in the sci-fi movies where the robots destroy the world) in a way that will leave humans with no jobs, meaning no money to earn, meaning more people will become homeless. Robotics, IS and WILL be the future of tomorrow. Robots will do GREAT things in the future, and will revolutionize the structure of the world.
